Travelling alone – try and plan your trip wisely

March 5th, 2012

Travelling alone has become a popular mode of travel in recent years. The ease of access to destinations thanks to budget air travel has made it easier for people to afford to travel on their own. Although travelling as a couple is usually a lot cheaper in terms of accommodation and food, travelling alone has a lot of benefits. You get to choose you itinerary, you can skip all the boring bits and best of all, when you make a mistake you only have yourself to blame.

Aim to book accommodation that has a 24-hour reception.

Delayed flights, getting lost on your journey or finding out that the directions you were given from your hotel are incorrect, can put a great deal of pressure on your holiday. There is nothing worse (except for annoying pop up displays on your computer) than waiting months for that trip of a lifetime, only to encounter problem after problem when it finally begins.

An excellent tip that I have learned from previous experience is to make sure that the hotel or hostel you are booking is open 24 hours a day. This way, if your flight is delayed by 10 hours or you can’t find your hotel, you will still be able to get to check in eventually.

I remember a group of friends who had booked a hotel in Valencia, Spain, only to arrive at the city 6 hours later than they had planned (due to holiday traffic on the motorway). Unfortunately, the hotel they had booked into was closed by the time they arrived. When this happened, they had no option but to spend the night in their car because there were no vacancies anywhere else. This, coupled with night time temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, was a particularly unpleasant experience.

Of course, if you are visiting a country where you don’t know more than two words of the language, a basic phrase book will help you ask questions to the locals should you get lost.
